Winner of the 2007 Commonwealth Writer's Prize, this novel is set mainly in a small village on Bougainville, a country torn apart by civil war. Mr Watts is the only white man on the island who set up a school there but as he is not much of a teacher, he proceeds to educate the children by reading to them Great Expectations. Matilda, a young student, falls in love with the book and strongly associates with Pip, the main character in it. Pip and the book keeps her going on where war is raging and rebels are rading the village. Follow Matilda's adventure as she pursues the memory of Mr Watts and Pip and frames her own memory, making this a Pacific Great Expectations. Mister Pip explores notions of storytelling, and the role of imagination in inventing the self.
